The Memphis Blues
"The night was black and the night was
blue"
And we heard the restless uninhibited Memphis
sing:
Well now it's three o'clock in the morning
And I can't even close my eyes
Three o'clock in the morning baby
And I can't even close my eyes
Can't find my baby.
Gertrude "Ma" Rainey
Gender: Female
Colour: Black/Tan
At 4:08 am, Gertrude "Ma" Rainey
emerged with her signature style and her entrance was spectacular.
Dolled up in an elaborate costume of black and tan, the Mother
of the Blues herself was belting out the "Morning Hour Blues" followed
by her famous See See Rider, I said C.C. Rider. She's the
original Gold Necklace Woman and with her legendary appearance,
the history of the Blues began.
Billie Holiday
Gender: Female
Colour: Black/Tan
Gertrude's solo act was immediately a duet that quickly
transitioned into the beginning strains of "Stormy Blues" at
4:13 am. Sharing the spotlight was the incomparable "Lady
Day," Billie Holiday. Named after
one of the most acclaimed singers, Billie is pure elegance.
And this lady sure can sing the Blues! With her own unique
spirit shining through we know her fame and popularity will
soar.
Beale
Gender: Female
Colour: Black
With the incredible crowd starting to gather, we needed
to find just the right home for the StormnAngels nightspot.
And there's simply no other place but that famed historical
landmark known as Beale Street,
that original cradle, the "Home of the Blues." The spirit
of that birthplace that helped to put Memphis on the musical
map is a girl of timeless beauty. Her rich honeyed voice
joined the rest at 4:37 am and she quickly climbed to the
number one spot on the charts that night.
Muddy Waters
Gender: Male
Colour: Black
The down-and-dirty bluesman Muddy Waters
began his career at 4:48 am. He quickly signed with the StormnAngels
record label and released his early versions of "Screamin' and
Cryin'" and "Rollin' and Tumblin'" and our personal favourite, "Got
My Mojo Working." We're very sure he's the original "Hoochie
Coochie Man."
B.B. King
Gender: Male
Colour: Black
With such talent jammin', it wasn't long before the original
Beale Street Blues Boy himself arrived at 5:28, after just
having played with the formidable T-Bone Walker. TM Records
scrambled to sign on The King of the Blues himself, B.B.
King. We listened to his release called "Woke Up This
Morning" and we fell all over his "Please Love Me." How could
we not? Now we're just Riding With the King with his electric
presence.
With these real Blues Brothers together we couldn't help
but hear the wailing all the way from Bluesville. And it
took us a while to figure that The King just couldn't play
without his Lucille.
Lucille
Gender: Female
Colour: Black
And at 6:04 she made her entrance, a Gibson girl dressed
all in black. B.B. says, "I'm very crazy about Lucille.
She just loves to be petted and played with." And we couldn't
agree more. Given some time together we heard both the King
and his trademark Lucille making their own sweet music.
The Blue Note
Gender: Female
Colour: Black
And, finally, arriving at 7:03, the transformation of the
family was complete with The Blue Note.
She came in on her own terms and took center stage with her
own self-assured rhythm. She's a "Big Fine Girl" and has
already won many admirers.
While we're "Walking in Memphis" somewhere in the distance,
we're still listening to them all. The dramatic boogie beat,
the sounds of "Moaning the Blues", the growls of Howlin' Wolf,
and the earthy "Hound Dog. The same questions asked "Big
Boss Man, Can you hear me when I call? "Who Do You Love?" and "Baby
What Do You Want Me to Do?"
Join us each week as we play with all the blues greats,
their high energy performances are sure to bring the house
down.
Yeah, baby.
